The MA Animal Welfare, Ethics and the Law is now open for the submission of applications for the Academic Year 2020-2021.

The MA Animal Welfare, Ethics and the Law was established in 2020 as the first Post Graduate Program of the kind in Greece. Its is being supported by the Department of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, and two renowned U.S.-based Academic Societies, the Humane Society Academy (HAS) and the Animals and Society Institute (ASI). It accepts students - irrespective of their academic background - who seek to improve their knowledge in the field.

In recent years, the social status of animals has evolved. The contribution of science in this evolution cannot be overlooked as behavioural, cognitive etc. studies increasingly point towards similarities between humans and animals. These similarities make us question our relationship with and use of animals and create the need for further studies which will explore these complex interactions in more depth.

In Greece, there is currently a growing interest in animal welfare and rights. This is evident by the existence and action of several animal protection groups as well as by the increasing numbers of vegetarians and vegans in the country. On the other hand, animal abuse reports and violations of animal welfare standards appear to be on the rise as well. There is animal welfare legislation in place but it is often overlooked by the authorities.
